Ghetto Fabulous: AGM and Karaoke After Party
This [was] Africa! The 2011 World Debating Championships
The UFO Debate
Welcome to ANU Debating!
ANU Spring 2010
Adelaide Easters 2011

ANU Debating is determined that our AGMs will never be boring. That’s why in 2010 we proved our ‘street cred’ by following ours with a gangsta themed karaoke after-party. With our own bootylicious Beyoncé and sexy Shakira leading the charge with Beautiful Liar, everybody had an amazing time demonstrating just how much study time they wasted learning rap lyrics and choreographing dance moves.
Over the summer break, ten ANU debaters and one adjudicator headed to the World Universities Debating Championships, which was hosted by the University of Botswana in the capital, Gaborone. ANU did incredibly well! ANU A, consisting of Claudia Newman-Martin and Matthew Sherman, and ANU B, consisting of Daniel Higginbottom and Paul Boulus, both broke to the final rounds. Our wonderful adjudicator Chanelle Carr-Janif also did us proud by breaking as an adjudicator and judging the quarter-finals.

The ANU Debating Society hosted a debate on the topic between world leading alien contact councillor and UFO-logist Mary Rodwell RN, and astrophysicist Dr. Charles Lineweaver, Senior Fellow at the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. The debate was filmed as part of the SBS documentary, My Mum Talks To Aliens – the link to which can be found here.
The ANU Debating Society is the most active student society on campus. Members can attend our weekly debates, barbeques, and social events every week, as well as travelling across Australia and the world to compete against other universities. It’s a fantastic way to get to know people, and get more out of university. Join us! Sign up at any of our debating nights, or e-mail us. You can also join us on Facebook.

ANU Spring 2010 was the largest Spring Tournament ever! Capping out in 24 hours, we think it is safe to say that we hosted the most popular British Parliamentary debating tournament in Australia since Sydney World’s.

Intervarsity tournaments are easily one of the best parts of university debating, and Easters (or the Australian Intervarsity Debating Championships) is probably the best intervarsity tournament of the year! This year, they are being held at the University of Adelaide, from April 26 – 29. YOU SHOULD COME!

ANU Spring Tournament

ANU Spring Tournament will be held from 2-4 September 2011. The tournament will begin at 6pm on Friday 2 September.

This year we will have 5 rounds of debating and break to semi-finals. If you are interested in helping out, please get in contact with us!

ANU Internal Competitions

Internal competitions are the weekly debates run for members of the ANU Debating Society. If you haven’t been to an internal round before, imagine free food, interesting topics, a fun debate, and all the feedback and training that you could want! We host three competitions throughout the year: the ANU Novice Competition (held in the 3 on 3 Australasian style), the ANU Open Competition (held in the 3 on 3 Australasian Style), and the ANU British Parliamentary Competition (World’s BP Style).

We hold internal debating competitions all year for every level of experience. The Novice competition is in the 3 on 3 style and is designed for people who are new to university debating. We begin with a free BBQ where you can sign up with a team or we can find you one. Debate interesting topics in a relaxed environment and learn as you go! The ANU Open competition in held in 2nd term, and the ANU British Parliamentary competition in Semester 2. You can debate every week or once a year. Try it!

The society hosts exhibition debates and prominent guest speakers for members throughout the year. As part of O-Week the ANU Debating Society hosts Politics in the Pub where students can buy a beer, listen to their nations’ leaders and ask probing questions. Politicians to be announced soon! Along with the free bbqs and pizza every week, we host debating dinners, drinks, coffee and cake and house parties throughout the year. Debaters make great friends and even if you don’t debate so much, it’s great value and you can have amazing fun!

Training

As a member of DebSoc you can get as much out of debating as you want. You can develop your debating skills by attending training sessions, attending exhibition debates and debating with more experienced debaters at Easters or in the ANU internal rounds.

We’re drawing up our training calendar now so please email us if you have any suggestions.

Intervarsity Competitions

Arguably the most fun part of debating is attending intervarsity tournaments. The thrill of competition and the fun of socials, hotel room parties and ANU solidarity is not to be missed. No matter whether you are new to debating or a seasoned tournament goer 2011 promises to be fantastic.

ANU Spring Tournament

ANU Spring is a mini intervarsity debating tournament run by the ANU Debating Society. In 2010 ANU Spring tournament was the largest intervarsity British Parliamentary competition in Australia. Debaters from all over Australia descended on Canberra to sample her discount priced drinks and beautiful landmarks. It’s never too early to get involved for 2011, email us if you’re interested.
