Welcome to the ANU Debating Society!

ANU Spring is coming up in full swing, for more information go to ANU Spring.

In this year's Australasia Interversity Debating Competition held by UT MARA, ANU Debating achieved some phenomenon results.

ANU 1 broke to the semi-finals, before losing to VUW1.  Tom Goldie tabbed equal 11th, Richard Keys tabbed equal 33rd, Laura Birchall tabbed equal 55th. ANU 2 narrowly missed out on the break, winning 4/8 debates and ending on high speaker points. Tom Chen also tabbed equal 55th. Emma Dunn, Clodagh O'Doherty, Richard Kong and Stacey Waring were promoted to chairing rooms.  This is particularly remarkable for Richard and Stacey, who were both first-time intervarsity adjudicators at the tournament.

ANU Debating was invited to debate against Melbourne University Debating Society in Parliament House in August on the topic "This house is representative". Richard Keys, Jessy Wu and Thomas Goldie debated as Affirmative. More detail at HERE

ANU Debating is one of the largest and most active student societies at the ANU, hosting a range of debates, public events, parties and socials.

Our internal debating competition is run weekly, meeting at 6.30pm on Tuesdays in the Manning Clark foyer area and are free to members of ANU Debating. Our internal rounds feature excellent training sessions, interesting debates and feedback from our experienced judges which will make sure you can develop as a debater in no time. After rounds we go out for relaxed drinks at a nice bar in Civic so that you can better get to know all the great people involved in ANU Debating. You can either bring your own team or have us form one for you; either way you will be sure to get an excellent debate.

ANU Debating hosts exhibition debates and prominent guest speakers for our members throughout the year. Every year, ANU Debating hosts Politics in the Pub, where students can buy a beer, listen to their nations' leaders and ask probing questions. On top of this, there are also debating dinners, drinks, coffee and cake and house parties throughout the year. Debaters are sure to make great friends from the ANU, Australia and the world.

Finally, ANU Debating represents the ANU at tournaments held around Australia and the World, including the Australian, Australasian and World Championships (which will this year be held in the Gold Coast, Kuala Lumpur and Chennai respectively). Moreover, we attend smaller tournaments across Australia and regularly perform extremely well. All these tournaments are open to all members of ANU Debating, granting excellent opportunities to travel the world whilst developing your skills as a debater.
