Welcome to the ANU Debating Society!

News

The World Universities Debating Championship in Berlin has concluded, as has the debating season for 2012!  We congratulate ANU A (Richard Keys and Tom Goldie), who ended the tournament on 17 points - one point and less than ten places away from breaking into the finals series!  We also congratulate Jacqui Yates, who broke through to the finals series as an adjudicator, a more than remarkable achievement at Worlds level.

In less international but nevertheless dramatic news, a team comprising of Richard Keys, Vincent Chiang and Tim Blair (University of Melbourne) broke through to the quarter-finals at MAD Mini in early February 2013.  Tom Goldie also ranked 7th best speaker at the tournament.

With 2012 (and the start of 2013) well and truly done, we welcome the full 2013 season, which brings with it a host of new and exciting opportunities, including major tournaments on the Gold Coast, in Malaysia, and in India.  Debating has never looked so exciting.

ANU Debating is one of the largest and most active student societies at the ANU, hosting a range of debates, public events, parties and socials.

Our internal debating competition is run weekly, meeting at 6.30pm on Tuesdays in the Manning Clark foyer area and are free to members of ANU Debating. Our internal rounds feature excellent training sessions, interesting debates and feedback from our experienced judges which will make sure you can develop as a debater in no time. After rounds we go out for relaxed drinks at a nice bar in Civic so that you can better get to know all the great people involved in ANU Debating. You can either bring your own team or have us form one for you; either way you will be sure to get an excellent debate.

ANU Debating hosts exhibition debates and prominent guest speakers for our members throughout the year. Every year, ANU Debating hosts Politics in the Pub, where students can buy a beer, listen to their nations' leaders and ask probing questions. On top of this, there are also debating dinners, drinks, coffee and cake and house parties throughout the year. Debaters are sure to make great friends from the ANU, Australia and the world.

Finally, ANU Debating represents the ANU at tournaments held around Australia and the World, including the Australian, Australasian and World Championships (which will this year be held in the Gold Coast, Kuala Lumpur and Chennai respectively). Moreover, we attend smaller tournaments across Australia and regularly perform extremely well. All these tournaments are open to all members of ANU Debating, granting excellent opportunities to travel the world whilst developing your skills as a debater.
